Hardfacing Research and Development FAQs

What kinds of hardfacing research and development projects does APEX ETG undertake?

APEX ETG undertakes applied R&D focused on:

  • advanced laser cladding process development,
  • Automated welding process development,
  • Alloy- application material compatibility analysis, and
  • field performance optimisation for heavy industry

Our successful applications include mining‑specific wear packages, corrosion‑resistant overlays for oil & gas, high‑impact protection for crushing/GET, and dimensional reclamation methodologies that minimise distortion while restoring OEM tolerances. These efforts span process trials, sample token production, metallurgical qualification, and pilot deployments with OEMs to validate life‑extension and downtime reductions.

Can you develop customised hardfacing alloy formulations for extreme wear environments?

Yes.  APEX ETG engineers customised alloy systems (e.g., tungsten‑ and chromium‑carbide overlays; stainless and nickel‑based chemistries) chosen for abrasion, erosion, corrosion, or impact mechanisms in extreme conditions such as iron‑ore handling and offshore media. Alloy selection and process windows are refined through in‑house metallurgical testing (microstructure, hardness profiles, PMI, mechanical testing) to ensure the deposited layer’s chemistry and microstructure meet target performance.
